The Fibre Starter Kit

Start here: pick a craft

Fibre crafts turn string and cloth into warm, useful, mended, homemade things — and they’re some of the calmest work there is. You only need one to start. Not sure which? A quick steer:

One craft, one small project

Pick a single craft and a single small make. A finished dishcloth beats a half-finished jumper every time — and it’s how the habit sticks.

The core stitches, at a glance

The whole of each craft, boiled down. Learn these and you can make real things.

Knitting
Cast on → knit stitch → cast (bind) off. Knit every row = garter stitch. Add the purl stitch later for stockinette.
Crochet
Slip knot → chain (ch) → single crochet (sc) → double crochet (dc). (Watch US vs UK stitch names — pick one and stick to it.)
Spinning
Draft (thin the fibre out) → let twist travel in → wind on. Spin two singles, then ply them the opposite way for balanced yarn.
Sewing
Running stitch, backstitch (the strong one), whipstitch (over an edge), slip/ladder stitch (nearly invisible). Four stitches mend almost anything.

Pair this with a video tutorial for your chosen craft — seeing the hands move makes it click.

First projects & common slips

Good first makes

  • Knitting: A garter-stitch dishcloth, then a simple scarf.
  • Crochet: A cotton washcloth or a granny square (→ coasters, a bag, a blanket).
  • Spinning: A small skein of "art yarn" — lumpy is normal and lovely.
  • Sewing: Mend a hem or a button first; then a drawstring bag or cushion cover.

Beginner mistakes to skip

  • Starting with dark, fuzzy or slippery materials — you can’t see what you’re doing.
  • Chasing a big project first. Finish a small thing; finishing builds the habit.
  • Fretting about tension/gauge on project one — it evens out with practice.
  • Thinking mistakes are wasted. You can undo and re-use every scrap.
